Aubagne, May 2025 - French startup Mobility-Metrix today unveils a groundbreaking analysis of daily carpooling in mainland France. Carried out using data from connected vehicles over a week in March 2025, excluding school vacations, this study, based on 1.2 million journeys, reveals that the Nice metropolis boasts the highest car load factor in the country, with 1.67 passengers per car on average, far exceeding the national average of 1.43 passengers recorded in 2018-2019 (source: Observatoire national du covoiturage - see box below). So for every 100 car journeys in Nice, 24 more people are transported!

What is daily carpooling in France?
Carpooling is the sharing of a journey by several people in one car. This journey is made to get to work, to do the shopping, to go to a cultural event, to a sports club, etc. Daily carpooling can be carried out informally with relatives, colleges, sports club members or by hitchhiking. It can also be organized via digital platforms specialized in daily carpooling, using a carpool line or an official hitchhiking stop.
